A Service Unique To J W Myers

Watches, Jewellery and Personal Possessions

Discreet and honest assistance for families dealing with an estate

When someone passes away, their family may be left with watches, jewellery and other personal possessions they know very little about.
Some items may have financial or collectable value, while others are important because of the memories attached to them. It is not always easy to know what something is, whether it is valuable or where to seek trustworthy advice.
J W Myers offers a discreet identification, assessment and purchasing service for selected personal possessions. We can help you understand what you have and, where appropriate, make a clear, no-obligation offer to purchase it.

There is never any pressure to sell.

Items We May Be Able to Help With
We are happy to consider a variety of items, including:
  • Modern and vintage wristwatches
  • Pocket watches
  • Gold, silver and other jewellery
  • Rings, necklaces, bracelets and brooches
  • Coins and medals
  • Silverware
  • Small antiques and collectables
  • Other personal possessions of potential value

We cannot promise to purchase every item. If something falls outside our own knowledge, we will be honest about this and may recommend obtaining advice from an appropriate specialist.

How the Service Works
1. An Initial Conversation
You can contact us in confidence and tell us a little about the items you have discovered. Photographs will often help us decide whether an appointment or closer inspection may be worthwhile.
2. Identification and Assessment
Where possible, we will examine the item, identify what it is and consider factors such as its age, condition, materials, authenticity, collectability and current market demand.
3. A Clear, No-Obligation Offer
If the item is something we would be interested in purchasing, we will make a straightforward offer. You are under no obligation to accept it and are welcome to take time to consider the offer or discuss it with other members of the family.
4. Proper Records and Payment
If you decide to proceed, the purchase will be properly recorded. We will require appropriate identification and confirmation that you are legally entitled to sell the item, and a written receipt will be provided.

Protecting the Family and the Estate
We understand that belongings discovered within an estate can sometimes be important to more than one member of the family.
Before purchasing an inherited or estate-owned item, we will ask for confirmation that the person instructing us has the legal authority to deal with it. Depending on the circumstances, we may also request confirmation from the executor or other relevant family members.
These checks are intended to protect the family, the estate and everyone involved. We will never knowingly purchase an item where its ownership or authority to sell is unclear.
Any purchase made by J W Myers is subject to a 30-day cooling-off period, during which you may cancel the sale and have the item returned.

Sentimental Value Comes First
The financial value of an item is not always the most important consideration.
A watch may have been worn every day for decades, a ring may mark a special occasion, and an apparently ordinary possession may hold irreplaceable memories. We encourage families to consider carefully whether an item should be retained or passed down before deciding to sell it.
Our role is to offer information and a possible purchase—not to persuade anyone to part with something they would rather keep.

Valuations and Specialist Advice
Our initial assessments are intended to help families identify personal possessions and consider a possible sale to J W Myers. If we make an offer and you decide to accept it, the agreed purchase price can be used as credit towards any memorial work we undertake. These assessments should not be treated as formal independent valuations for probate, insurance or legal purposes. Where a formal valuation or specialist opinion is required, this should be arranged separately with an appropriately qualified and independent valuer.

Speak to Us in Confidence
If you have discovered watches, jewellery or other potentially valuable possessions while dealing with an estate, please contact us for an informal and confidential conversation.
There is no obligation to proceed. Every enquiry will be treated with care, discretion and respect.
